Understanding Your NDIS Plan: Making the Most of Your Supports

An NDIS plan is designed to help you work towards your goals, build independence and access the supports you need in everyday life.

But when you first receive a plan, all the different budgets, support categories and terminology can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Understanding what your plan is designed to achieve can help you feel more confident about making decisions and getting the most from your available supports.

Start With Your Goals

Your NDIS goals are an important part of your plan.

They might include becoming more independent at home, developing daily living skills, participating more in your community, finding employment, building relationships or improving your confidence in everyday activities.

Your supports should help you work towards the things that are important to you.

That's why choosing services shouldn't simply be about asking, “What can I spend this funding on?”

A better question is:

“How can my supports help me achieve what I want from my life?”

Understanding Your Funding

Depending on your individual plan, NDIS funding may be available across different support categories.

These can help with things such as personal care, assistance with everyday activities, community participation, developing life skills and other disability-related supports.

Not every participant receives the same funding or can use their funding in exactly the same way.

Your supports should always be appropriate to your individual circumstances and consistent with the funding available within your NDIS plan.

You Have Choice and Control

One of the most important principles of the NDIS is choice and control.

You should have a say in who provides your supports, how those supports are delivered and what you want to work towards.

Finding a provider or support worker doesn't mean you're giving up that control.

A good provider should listen to you, explain your options clearly and involve you in decisions about your support.

Choose Supports That Have Purpose

It's worth thinking about what you want each support to accomplish.

For example, community participation might be an opportunity to develop confidence, meet people or explore new interests.

Assistance with daily living could help you develop skills around cooking, shopping, household activities or managing everyday routines.

The important thing is that your support is meaningful to you.

Find the Right People

How your support is delivered can be just as important as what support you receive.

A participant and support worker may spend considerable time together, so finding someone you feel comfortable with matters.

Experience and qualifications can be important, but personality, communication style, interests and reliability can also make an enormous difference.

You should feel respected, listened to and comfortable communicating your preferences.

Ask Questions

You don't have to understand every part of the NDIS immediately.

If you're unsure about something, ask.

Before commencing a service, you should understand what support will be provided, what it will cost, when it will occur and what arrangements apply if you want something changed.

There is no such thing as a silly question when it's your funding, your support and your life.

Review What Is Working

Your needs and goals can change over time.

Something that worked well six months ago might no longer be the best option today.

Regularly think about your supports:

Are they helping you?

Do you enjoy working with the people supporting you?

Are you developing the skills or confidence you wanted?

Is there something you'd like to do differently?

Good support should be able to evolve with you.

How Jasvelia Can Support Your Journey

At Jasvelia, we believe participants should be at the centre of decisions about their support.

Our approach begins by getting to know the person — their goals, preferences, abilities, interests and the things that matter to them.

From there, we can work together to provide personalised support that encourages choice, independence, confidence and meaningful participation in everyday life.

Jasvelia provides disability support across Northern Tasmania, including Launceston and the surrounding communities.

Whether you're new to the NDIS, exploring different supports or simply looking for a provider that takes the time to listen, we're here to have a conversation.

Because your NDIS plan isn't just a collection of funding categories.

It's a tool to help you build the life you want to live.
