Choosing the Right NDIS Support Provider: What Really Matters?
Choosing an NDIS support provider is an important decision. The right provider isn't simply someone who can deliver a service — they should understand what matters to you, respect your choices and help you work towards greater independence and the life you want to live.
At Jasvelia, we believe good support starts with the person. Here are some of the things we believe participants and families should consider when choosing an NDIS provider.
1. Communication and listening
Good support begins with listening. Your provider should take the time to understand your needs, goals, preferences and the things that are important to you.
Communication should also work both ways. You should feel comfortable asking questions, raising concerns and talking openly about what's working — and what isn't.
2. Reliability and consistency
Having support you can depend on matters.
Where possible, participants should have consistency in the people supporting them rather than continually having unfamiliar workers arriving. A good provider should also communicate clearly about schedules and changes and work hard to provide reliable support.
3. Finding the right people
Qualifications and experience matter, but so does personality.
The support worker who is perfect for one participant may not be right for another. Interests, communication style, personality and individual preferences can all affect whether a participant and support worker work well together.
That's why thoughtful participant-worker matching is so important.
4. Choice and control
Choice and control are fundamental principles of the NDIS.
Your provider should involve you in decisions about your supports rather than making those decisions for you. Your goals and preferences should help shape how your support is delivered.
Ultimately, it's your life and your support.
5. Experience and capability
Consider whether a provider has people with the skills and experience appropriate for your individual needs.
Different participants require very different types of support. A good provider should recognise the limits of its capabilities as well as its strengths and make sure workers are appropriately suited to the supports they're delivering.
6. Trust and respect
Perhaps most importantly, you should feel comfortable with the people supporting you.
Disability support can involve inviting someone into very personal parts of your everyday life. Trust, dignity, privacy and respect therefore aren't optional extras — they're fundamental to good support.
