Getting Out and Getting Involved: Why Community Participation Matters

For many people, being part of the community is about much more than simply leaving the house. It can mean meeting people, developing confidence, discovering new interests and having opportunities to participate in everyday life.
At Jasvelia, we believe community participation should be shaped around the individual — their interests, goals, preferences and what they actually enjoy doing.
Community participation is different for everyone
There is no single activity that suits everybody.
For one person, getting involved might mean joining a sporting or recreation group. For someone else, it could mean visiting a café, going shopping, attending a local event, exploring a hobby, volunteering or simply becoming more confident visiting new places.
What matters is that the activity has meaning to the person participating.
Support shouldn't be about filling time.
It should be about creating opportunities.
Building confidence in everyday situations
Everyday community activities can provide opportunities to develop valuable skills.
Ordering a meal, purchasing something from a shop, navigating a new environment or talking with other people might seem routine, but these experiences can help someone build communication skills, confidence and greater independence.
Progress doesn't always need to involve a major milestone.
Sometimes it's becoming comfortable doing something today that felt difficult six months ago.
Discovering new interests
Trying something new can open doors.
Someone might discover an interest in photography, gardening, cooking, fishing, art, sport, music or exploring Tasmania.
A good support worker can help create opportunities for someone to discover those interests without deciding what they should enjoy.
The participant remains in control.
Developing social connections
Community participation can also provide opportunities to meet people and develop relationships beyond paid supports.
That's important.
A support worker can provide assistance and encouragement, but their role shouldn't be to become someone's entire social network.
Good support can help people develop their own connections within their community.
The right support worker can make a difference
Getting out into the community can feel very different depending on who you're with.
That's another reason we believe participant-worker matching matters.
Shared interests can be particularly valuable with community-based support. Someone who enjoys cars might appreciate a worker who shares that interest. Someone who loves the outdoors may enjoy being supported by somebody who genuinely enjoys getting outside too.
Personality, communication and mutual interests can help turn support from simply completing scheduled hours into something meaningful.
Choice should come first
Participants should have a genuine say in what they do.
That might mean planning activities ahead of time or simply deciding on the day.
Support should encourage people to make choices, try new experiences where they want to, and develop confidence making decisions for themselves.
Because community participation isn't about taking someone where we think they should go.
It's about helping them get where they want to go.
Community participation with Jasvelia
At Jasvelia, we want to provide personalised disability support that helps people participate in their communities in ways that are meaningful to them.
That can include assistance accessing activities, developing everyday skills, exploring interests, building confidence and working towards greater independence.
We're based in Northern Tasmania and provide support throughout Launceston and the Northern Region.
Our approach is centred around the individual — because everybody has different interests, different goals and a different idea of what a fulfilling life looks like.
Your community. Your interests. Your choices.
Jasvelia — Supporting Your Journey.
